5 Factors To Consider When Choosing A Vacuum Cleaner
My Hoover Sucks…………………or Does It?

The suction your hoover provides is down to the wattage of the motor. Basically, the higher the wattage the more powerful the motor is and the more suction your hoover will provide.
Air Watts (what on earth is this?)
I must admit I had never heard of Air Watts until I started to pull together this review. Air Watts, I am reliably informed, are a better measure of suction than motor power! Air Watts look at the actual performance of the vacuum and not just the motor power. Should you get a blockage in your vacuum, the level of Air Watts can however be vastly reduced, but this is such a great vacuum, I’m sure this will never happen to you.
How Effective at Dust Pick Up?
The shape and design of the nozzle on your upright vacuum can have a dramatic effect on it’s pick up performance. The higher the percentage of dust pick up, the more effective this upright vacuum will be. This is also measured using the European Test Standard performance measures.
A good measure of performance is one that gives an overall score for air watts and dust pick up.
Bag or Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Unsure whether to choose a bagged or a bagless upright vacuum cleaner? This will help you decide:
There is no statistics to prove that Bagless vacuum cleaners perform any better or worse than bagged.
When considering a bagged vs bagless vacuum cleaner, it can be helpful to remember:
- Bagless vacuum cleaners do not necessarily perform better than bagged
- Bagless vacuum cleaners by definition require no bags, so no additional costs
- Bagless vacuum cleaners allow you to see the dirt picked up and you can see at a glance when your vacuum needs emptying. Many bagged vacuum cleaners have warning lights that perform this function i.e. let you see when bag is full!
- Some bagless vacuum cleaners require regular cleaning of filters to ensure maximum performance every time.
- If you, or someone close is an asthma sufferer or has an allergy, you may wish to opt for the bagged vacuum cleaner as bagless ones can expose the user to dust when emptying.
- Bagged vacuum cleaners are possibly more hygienic and dust disposal is simple and easy.
Types of Upright Vacuum Filter
Filters in upright vacuum cleaners fall into 2 categories, the Micro Filter or the HEPA filter.
Micro Filter - This is the type of filter found on basic vacuum cleaners. It is ideal for general use. You may find you can easily wash your Micro Filter and some others will need replacing when they become clogged or worn.
Hepa Filter - These filters trap and capture small pollutants and pollen particles making them ideal for allergy/asthma sufferers. Most are washable and reusable.
- In a bagged vacuum cleaner, the HEPA filtration method is within the materials used to make the bag.
- In a bagless vacuum cleaner, air and dust is blown up and around the HEPA filter. As it spins, the dust is thrown out and settles at the bottom of the bin.
The faster the airflow, the greater the amount of dust thrown out. With top rated vacuum cleaners, such as hoover, almost all dust is removed leaving the filters ‘clog free’ and maintaining constant suction.
